Dolce and Gabbana: Sicily in a Bottle
Almost everything Dolce and Gabbana makes traces back to Sicily. The clothes do it with lemon prints and black lace; the fragrances do it with citrus, sun and a kind of unembarrassed warmth. No house has translated a specific stretch of coastline into perfume more literally, or more successfully.
Light Blue is the proof. Sicilian cedrat, green apple and cedarwood, with very little in the way of complication, is a formula that has stayed in constant rotation since 2001 and shows no sign of stopping. It works in humidity in a way heavier fragrances simply do not, which explains why it never sits still on a South Florida shelf. The One is the other pillar and the opposite mood: warmer, spicier, ambery, built for cooler evenings and long dinners rather than daylight. The Only One takes the women's line somewhere darker and more velvety, with violet and coffee. Dolce and Gabbana K opens on blood orange and pimento over a dry woody base, made for men who want more edge than Light Blue offers and less weight than The One carries. Pour Femme fills in the powdery, classically feminine corner.
