Mugler Invented the Gourmand
When Angel launched in 1992 there was no such thing as a gourmand fragrance. Thierry Mugler put patchouli underneath caramel, chocolate and red berries, poured it into a jagged blue star, and every sweet perfume released in the three decades since owes it something. It remains one of the most polarising bottles in perfumery: people either wear it for life or cannot share a room with it.
We carry Angel in several forms, including the refillable 50ml bottle, which is worth pointing out because Mugler was building refillable flacons long before refills became a marketing line. Angel Nova swaps the chocolate for damask rose and raspberry and is considerably easier to wear in public. The Angel Muse set pairs a 50ml eau de parfum with a 9ml travel spray, and there is a boxed Angel gift set as well.
Alien is the house's other pillar and the other extreme: jasmine sambac, cashmeran and amber in a purple gemstone bottle, hypnotic and faintly strange. Alien Goddess softens it with vanilla and coconut, and Alien Fusion pushes it brighter. The Alien Talisman set arrives in its full presentation box.
For men there is Amen, originally launched as A*Men, a chocolate, lavender and patchouli composition every bit as radical as Angel was and still unlike anything else sitting on a men's counter.
Mugler perfume is not subtle and has never tried to be. Two sprays travel a long way, particularly in Florida humidity. Angel Nova, Alien Fusion and Amen are among the bottles offered in 5ml and 10ml decants, which is the sensible way to work out where you land on Angel before buying full size.
