Prada: Milanese Restraint in a Bottle
Prada approaches perfume the way it approaches clothing, which is to say with a certain intellectual coolness. Miuccia Prada made her name resisting obvious glamour, and the fragrances inherit that instinct. They tend to be clean, structured and slightly reserved, built around one clear idea rather than a pile of loud notes. If you find most designer releases too eager to please, this is usually the shelf that fixes it.
Luna Rossa is the men's pillar, named after the sailing team Prada has backed for decades, and the two versions here go in opposite directions. Luna Rossa Carbon is the metallic, mineral, faintly smoky one that became a default for men who wanted something modern and not sweet. Luna Rossa Ocean is the airier, saltier reading of the same lavender and amber frame. Alongside them sit Prada L'Homme, whose iris and neroli soapiness manages to be formal and soft at once, and Prada Black.
On the women's side, Paradoxe is the current centre of gravity: a musky neroli composition in a refillable bottle shaped like the Prada triangle. It is here as the standard eau de parfum, as Paradoxe Virtual Flower, and in two boxed sets, one of them built around Paradoxe Intense. Prada Candy, Candy Kiss and La Femme cover the older and more decadent end, Candy being the caramel and benzoin composition that made gourmand acceptable in a Milanese register.
Iris runs quietly through much of the house's output, and that is part of why Prada perfume reads as considered rather than showy. It is a house for people who would rather be asked what they are wearing than announced by it.
