Xerjoff: Turin, and the Art of the Sub-Collection

Xerjoff is Sergio Momo's house, based in Turin, and it is organised less like a perfume brand than like a record label with several imprints. Getting your bearings means learning the collections, and this page has a representative from most of them.

1861 Naxos is the release that made the house famous outside collector circles. Named for the year of Italian unification, it is lavender, honey, tobacco and tonka, sitting somewhere between a gourmand and a classic fougere without fully committing to either. It is the Xerjoff most people should smell first.

The Casamorati line revives a Bolognese perfume house from 1888, and Lira is its best-known bottle: caramel, lavender and liquorice in an ornate flacon that looks a century older than it is. From the core V collection, Erba Pura is the fruity, sparkling, endlessly wearable one that has converted more sceptics than anything else here, and Erba Gold is its warmer, more amber-heavy sibling.

Oud Stars Alexandria II is the house at its most opulent, oud and rose and honey at full volume. Torino 21 is a tribute to Momo's own city. JTC Don comes from the Join The Club line. Tony Iommi Monkey Special was made with the Black Sabbath guitarist and is exactly as unusual as that suggests. Overture rounds the selection out.
