Tonka bean settles the argument about twenty minutes in, sliding underneath with an almond-and-tobacco sweetness, and musk carries the whole thing out long and low. Bond No. 9 pitches it as a meeting of East and West, Dubai and New York, and for once the line matches what is in the bottle: a Middle Eastern structure wearing a New York cut.

Heavy oud in South Florida is a discipline. This one is concentrated and it amplifies fast - by the time you have walked from a parking garage to a restaurant door in July, one spray has already done the work of three. Ten to twelve hours on skin is normal, and it will still be on a shirt collar after a wash cycle you were not expecting it to survive. The humidity actually flatters the rose, keeping it plush where dry cold air tends to shrivel it, but the same moisture pushes the oud forward and makes it louder. In August, one spray to the chest under a shirt and none to the neck, and let the fabric meter it out for you.

Evening wear, cooler months, and any night where you would rather be remembered than agreed with. It leans unisex - the rose reads feminine, the oud and tonka masculine - and it is genuinely too much for a shared office in summer. Save it for dinners, weddings and winter nights out.
