Cool, polished, and soapy in the way expensive things sometimes are. Reflection Man opens on rosemary and red pepper berries over bitter orange leaves, a bright green-herbal snap that lasts only a few minutes before the florals take over - and the florals are the whole story. Neroli, orris, jasmine and ylang-ylang build a creamy white-floral heart that still reads as unmistakably masculine, largely because orris keeps it dry and slightly cold instead of sweet. Underneath, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver and patchouli lay down a smooth woody floor with no rough edges. Amouage has kept this in the lineup since 2006 for a reason: it smells refined without smelling dated.

Longevity is strong - eight to ten hours is typical, with the sandalwood still detectable at the end of a long day. Projection is moderate and civilized; it does not fill a room so much as occupy the space around you. In Miami humidity the white florals bloom faster and bigger than they do in dry climates, so the first hour can feel more lush than you expect, and that is worth planning around. Applied at 7am before an air-conditioned commute, it settles into a soft clean skin scent by lunch and holds there all afternoon. Applied at 6pm in July, the jasmine and ylang-ylang open up immediately and stay open.

A four-season fragrance here, though it is at its most elegant in our cooler months and at night. Genuinely office-appropriate, and a strong choice for weddings, services, and anywhere restraint is the goal.

Niche florals are personal, and orris in particular can read very differently skin to skin. Take a 5ml or 10ml decant to wear it properly for a few days, or stop into the Miami Gardens shop and put it on your wrist first.
