Picture something bright and a little tart landing on top of something dark and polished. Sutton Place opens with a burst of blackcurrant, tangerine and pineapple lifted by pink pepper - juicy, but sharpened rather than sugary - and within twenty minutes that fruit is being pulled downward into patchouli, jasmine and lily. What it settles into is the interesting part: soft leather, amber, musk and a thread of vanilla, the smell of a well-kept jacket rather than a saddle. Bond No. 9 built it as a tribute to the quiet diplomatic pocket of Manhattan it is named for, and the scent carries that same composed, buttoned-up character.

Top: Cassis, bergamot, tangerine, pink pepper, pineapple · Heart: Jasmine, lily, patchouli · Base: Leather, amber, musk, vanilla

This is a heavyweight. Ten hours plus is normal, and the leather-amber drydown will still be readable on a shirt the next morning. Miami humidity treats the two halves differently: the fruit opening gets amplified hard and can smell almost syrupy in the first fifteen minutes if you overspray on a wet August morning, while the leather base actually behaves better here than in dry climates - moisture keeps it supple and stops it going scratchy. Practical approach for South Florida: two sprays, both under clothing rather than on the neck, and let the heat do the projecting for you. In an air-conditioned office it stays polite; outdoors at 90 degrees it announces itself from several feet away.

Best from late fall through spring, and best after dark. Dinner, a wedding, a night where you want the fragrance remembered. It is fully unisex - the fruit and florals read feminine, the leather reads masculine, and the balance lands in the middle.

Bond No. 9 is a serious commitment, which is exactly why we offer this in 5ml and 10ml decants. Wear one for a week before you decide. Or stop into the Miami Gardens shop and spray it properly on skin - leather notes are notoriously bad at showing their real character on a blotter.
