City Rhythm Tempo 100 ml Extrait

City Rhythm blends, bottles and boxes every fragrance by hand, and Tempo is the newest addition to their line of movement-named scents. What it actually smells like: pear and bergamot up front, brighter and longer-lasting than fruit tops usually manage, with strawberry and a sugared edge that stops well short of dessert. The middle turns unexpectedly serious, tonka and incense and lily of the valley over soft rose and pepper, and the base is a classic dry finish of ambergris, oakmoss, vetiver and vanilla. Fresh and woody and sweet at the same time, which is harder to balance than it sounds.

This is an extrait concentration, so the density is high and two sprays is a full application. The house designed the sillage to trail continuously off the skin rather than announce itself in a burst, and that choice pays off in this climate. Fragrances built to project hard become oppressive in humid air, while ones built to drift stay pleasant. On a hot afternoon here the pear and sugar stay lifted while the oakmoss and vetiver hold the base dry underneath, so it never turns heavy the way a sweeter extrait would. Longevity runs all day and then some, and a shirt worn today will still be carrying it tomorrow.

Versatile enough for a country club lunch and a nightclub the same evening, which is roughly how the house pitches it and is fair enough. Office-safe if you are honest with yourself about the spray count. Any season, though the freshness makes warm weather easiest.
