Coconut milk rather than coconut candy - that distinction is what makes this one work. The opening is soft and lactonic, cut by Tahitian lime and a tart hibiscus nectar that keeps it from turning into dessert. Underneath, white rum gives the heart a boozy lift while jasmine and magnolia add a proper floral spine, and it lands on vanilla orchid, tonka bean, sandalwood and a resinous streak of myrrh. That myrrh is the surprise - it puts a slightly smoky, incense-touched shadow under all the tropical sweetness and gives the drydown a seriousness most beach fragrances never bother with.

Top: Coconut milk, hibiscus nectar, Tahitian lime · Heart: Jasmine, white rum, magnolia · Base: Vanilla orchid, tonka bean, myrrh, sandalwood

Extrait strength, and it performs like it: eight to twelve hours, with real presence for the first several. Its Miami behavior is worth describing carefully, because it is not the same as most sweet fragrances. Coconut lactones can go rancid-smelling in high heat when they are cheaply done; this one does not, because the lime and hibiscus stay tart well into the afternoon and the myrrh anchors the base. What does happen locally is that the rum note gets noticeably bigger - on a humid night it reads almost like a cocktail in the glass, which is either the appeal or the reason to save it for after sundown. Two to three sprays covers you.

Warm-weather evenings above all. Dinner outdoors, a night on the beach, a party where you want a trail. It is too sweet and too loud for a conservative office. Worn by everyone - it is built unisex and lands that way, with the rum and myrrh keeping it from skewing purely feminine.

There is no decant size on this release, only the full bottle, so we would rather you smell it first than guess. Come by the Miami Gardens shop and test it on skin - it is a fragrance that changes a lot between the first minute and the thirtieth.
