Rose and rum over a deep amber, with cinnamon giving it teeth. Amberique opens bright and assertive - grapefruit first, bitter and juicy, with pink pepper and cinnamon prickling behind it so the citrus never reads as simply refreshing. The heart is the interesting part: a Turkish-style rose, full and slightly melancholy, sitting alongside a rum note and cacao. Boozy rose is a hard trick to pull off and this one manages it, the rum lending warmth and the cacao a dry, dusty bitterness that keeps the flower from turning jammy. Then amber and patchouli take over completely, and they are the reason the fragrance is named what it is - thick, resinous, earthy, and very long-lasting. Mes Bisous writes the character as gentle at the core and fierce underneath, which is a fair description of how it wears.

Amber and patchouli are the two materials that swell most in Miami humidity, so this is a fragrance to dose carefully here. At extrait strength you are looking at ten to twelve hours on skin and considerably longer on clothing, with a trail that fills a room in the first hour. On a hot afternoon the rum and amber get noticeably sweeter and heavier, and the cinnamon can push into the foreground. In practice that means one or two sprays from May to September, and it comes into its own on a cool evening when the resins have room to unfold slowly instead of all at once.

Unisex, though the rose leans feminine. Evenings, dinners, cold weather, and any occasion where being noticed is the point. Not a daytime office fragrance in summer.
