Green apple skin, then earth and iris. That contrast is the whole idea. Essence of Casablanca opens juicy and almost sweet - crisp apple with grape sitting behind it - and then patchouli arrives far earlier than you expect, dragging the fruit somewhere darker and more mineral. Orris root brings a cool, powdery, faintly waxy quality through the middle, and the base of amber, balsams, musk and vanilla reads warm and lightly caramelized without ever tipping into dessert.

Strong. Expect nine hours or more, with a projection arc that stays generous well past the first hour. Patchouli is the material that most obviously changes character in humid air - it turns earthier and rounder here than the drier, more chocolatey patchouli you notice in cold climates - and in Miami that shift begins within the first half hour. The apple opening is the part the heat eats; on a ninety-two-degree afternoon it can be gone inside ten minutes and you land on the patchouli-and-iris heart almost immediately. If that opening is what you love, spray it in the car with the air conditioning running and enjoy it there.

Unisex and grown-up rather than youthful. Evening, cooler months, dressed-up occasions. Heavy for a small office, but well suited to a client dinner. December through February in South Florida is where it makes the most sense, though the earthiness survives rain better than most sweet fragrances do.
